It was hot. Like unbelievably hot. The kind of heat where my faux leather vegan camera bag literally melted to my shirt and I had to throw the shirt out afterwards. Not exactly glamorous, but somehow very on brand for this unforgettable wedding day.
Fiona and Kevin’s love story began at a music festival while Fiona was visiting Europe. One of those chance meetings that instantly feels meant to be. Not long after, the rest was history. Fiona now lives overseas, but the couple chose to celebrate their love with weddings both abroad and here in Canada, bringing people together from all over the world.
I first photographed Fiona and Kevin during their summer engagement session the year before, and it was just as sweet as you would expect. If you haven’t seen that session yet, it’s definitely worth checking out. Their connection is effortless and full of joy.
For their Victoria wedding, I was lucky enough to work alongside the lovely Akzhana of Salish Coast Photography, who is genuinely one of the coolest photographers in town. Akzhana captured the boys getting ready in town while I spent the morning with the girls in the bridal room at Hatley Castle. Emotions were already running high, tears were flowing, and Fiona looked absolutely breathtaking.
Once preparations were finished, Akzhana met back up with me at Hatley Castle and second shot alongside me through the ceremony. The ceremony itself was a beautiful mix of modern and traditional, thoughtfully incorporating Kevin’s Scottish heritage with a hand fasting ceremony. Despite the intense heat and me slowly melting behind the camera, it was incredibly heartfelt and meaningful.
After they said “I do,” Akzhana headed out and it was just me for the rest of the day. I took photos of the stunning wedding party around the castle grounds and then spent plenty of time focusing on just Fiona and Kevin. I always encourage couples to take little breaks to pause and be present together, and I loved watching them soak it all in.
From Hatley Castle, we made our way back into town for the reception at Fiona’s parents’ home in Oak Bay. The property was beautiful and spacious, complete with koi fish, lush gardens, and the warmest group of people welcoming guests as they arrived. Dinner followed shortly after and everything looked amazing. The meal was catered by the wonderful team at Truffles Catering, and Fiona very thoughtfully made sure there was a special separate vegan option for me as well. She ordered a delicious orzo dish from be love, which was such a kind and appreciated touch.
Speeches came next and they were hilarious, heartfelt, and emotional in the very best way. There were plenty of laughs and more than a few tears. One of the standout moments of the evening was a surprise Fiona had planned just for Kevin. Knowing how much he loves live music, she secretly booked a band for the reception. The incredibly talented Daniel Lapp and a few buds played as the dance floor filled, setting the tone for an unforgettable night.
The band played while Fiona and Kevin shared their first dance, followed by one of the most fun dessert moments I have ever seen. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, they opted for a piñata cake. Almost everyone lined up to take a swing, and honestly, I think the adults enjoyed it even more than the kids. Candy exploded everywhere! I am pretty sure I got a toothache just from photographing all the sweets.
The rest of the night turned into a full on dance party, and the energy never dipped. From start to finish, this wedding felt incredibly personal, intentional, and full of love. I truly felt like a member of the family and I am so grateful I got to be part of Fiona and Kevin’s day. Congratulations to the newlyweds! #KevFi2025
